When a toddler holds on to a poo

Published by Upcott Studios. Parent reading, not a medical leaflet.

Not a treatment plan. Pain, bleeding, vomiting, or several uncomfortable days without a poo needs your GP, health visitor, or NHS 111. Do not start laxatives from a web page.

Some toddlers, once they notice a poo coming, decide the feeling is the problem and try to stop it. You might see them hide behind the sofa, cross their legs, or go stiff and quiet. Later there may be a skid in the pants, or a poo that only happens in a nappy you put on for a nap. They are not being difficult. Holding on is often a worry: it hurt once, the room is cold, or they are afraid the poo will fall away and be gone.

Do not trap them on the seat

Long forced sits, while you wait them out, teach them that the bathroom is where people get stuck. A few minutes, a book, and permission to get up is kinder. If they poo in a nappy behind the curtain, change them without a speech, then try the potty again at a calm time. Warm the room. Loose clothes help them arrive before the holding pose starts.

This page will not prescribe

Keep food and drink ordinary. Do not use this article as a reason to start laxatives, “medicine juice”, or a special diet. If a child is in pain, bleeding, vomiting, or has gone several days without a poo and is uncomfortable, phone your GP, health visitor, or NHS 111. Constipation is common and treatable, and a clinician decides what treatment means.

Keep the words light

“Your body is trying to let the poo out. We can sit, or we can try again after the story.” Avoid naughty and dirty. More lines are in what to say after an accident. Boys who only stand to wee still need a sit for a poo, which is why sitting first saves trouble later. The readiness ticks on the Learn page will not spot withholding. Watch the hiding, not the score.
